Stefano Monti is currently President of the European Nuclear Society and of the Italian Nuclear Association, as well as Chair of the Advisory Board of the Italian Joint Research Partnership on nuclear.
From May 2011 to November 2022, he was Head of the Nuclear Power Technology Development Section in the Department of Nuclear Energy of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In this position, he was responsible for the IAEA programme on technology development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactors, as well as non-electric applications of nuclear power. Additionally, the programme addresses technology development of fusion reactors for energy production. At the IAEA, Stefano Monti was also the Chair of the Agency-wide Platform for SMRs and their Applications.
Before joining the IAEA, as Director of Research at the Italian ENEA, Stefano Monti was Head of the Division Reactor and Fuel Cycle Safety and Security Methods, andScientific Coordinator of the Italian R&D programme on nuclear fission sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Development. From 2000 to 2006 he was member of the Board of Directors of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) and from 2007 to 2013 President of SIET, a world leader company in the experimental tests for the development, testing, qualification and certification of systems and components for the nuclear industry.
From 1999 to 2006 Stefano Monti was Scientific Secretary of the ENEA Scientific Council reporting to the President and the Board of Directors, and Scientific Advisor to President of ENEA.
In his forty-year career, Stefano has been working on and coordinating several national and international projects and programmes on advanced nuclear systems, their applications and related fuel cycles.
Stefano Monti has been serving in a number of national and international nuclear committees, including the Steering Committee and the Committee for Technical and Economic Studies on Nuclear Energy Development and the Fuel Cycle of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, the Executive Committee of the European Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform, the European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative, the IAEA Technical Working Group on Fast Reactors. As of October 2025, Stefano Monti is Board member of the WNA World Nuclear Foundation.
Stefano Monti holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering (exact Italian title: dottore in ingegneria nucleare) from the University of Bologna and is a professional licensed engineer.
